URI

URI or Uniform Resource Identifier is a unique sequence of characters that identifies a resource.

Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), such as http://www.example.com/index.html or ftp://someresource.com/my/files, are subsets of URIs.

However, a URN (Uniform Resource Name) like urn:isbn:8123958324 or urn:uuid:f47ac10b-58cc-4372-a567-0e02b2c3d479 would also be a URI, but not a URL, as:

  1. It doesn't specify how to access or retrieve the resource.
  2. It doesn't include a protocol.
  3. It doesn't point to a specific location on the internet.
